From “To change Wal-Mart, first change America”
——————
Joseph Nocera The New York Times
FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 4, 2005
…Similarly, what was true 70 years ago remains true today: Americans could shut down Wal-Mart, and allow small local stores to thrive, by doing one simple thing: shopping at the latter instead of the former.
But Americans don’t do that, and for the most basic of reasons: They care about low prices above all else. That is what the U.S. economy is built around. The growth of Wal-Mart is a direct result of its understanding of that fundamental fact.

And it’s not onesy, twosy - it’s almost all of them - no wonder they want more H1B visas. Excerpts:

Their is a University in Georgia (the names escapes me) which
also, reading the tea leaves, cancelled all of their engineering
curriculums.
This is “Institutionalized Age Discrimination”.
Older workers forced off the payroll and then replaced with
younger and cheaper H-1B workers.
Tellab’s management ( telecom company that actually used to hire IT types in the Chicago area pre-2001) refers to this as a ” YOUTH MOVEMENT”.

I heard this on a radio program I
the other day on NPR, exploring the potential impacts of a
global flu outbreak. What was interesting is that a signficant part of the
potential for trouble isn’t the flu itself, but that a serious flu outbreak
is likely to disrupt global commerce. There are many thing we need,
including a lot of medications, that we don’t (and probably can’t) make in
the US any more and would likely be unavailable for some time. Not
something that gets considered in making decisions about outsourcing - at least not by the execs pushing our jobs to other countires. Of course, I’ve been saying this for over two years … and it’s the birds that prove me right.

It’s been over two years since my first post about this, and now the USA is well on its way to becoming a 3rd world country. Once most of the tech
jobs are exported, new companies will spring up in the countries with the newly
found technical expertise, and they will knock the USA companies out of business.
But the USA execs won’t care because they will have made their big bucks by
giving the country’s technical advantage away. While claiming its being done
because there are not enough technical graduates from our domestic schools. They’ll all be retired and probably living in some foreign country themselves, although you can bet it won’t be in India. Pretty
funny, in a cynical sort of way.

Could it be that the DC politicians simply don’t know that there are
thousands of displaced tech workers looking for jobs over the past 6
years?
Yes, there is a really good chance that this is true - they are in their ‘bubble’, and they just don’t see the rest of the country - the real country, that is. I went for a job interview in MD, right outside of DC, and they just couldn’t believe that there are IT folks in IL (where I live) that can’t find jobs - if you are in the DC area and have a clearance - you can be an idiot and find a job. I’m not kidding, that’s more or less what I’ve been told: clearance + breath = job. Of course, I am ’sans’ clearance, so…
