Proofreading and Editing Services

Because Sometimes You Need a Fresh Set Of Eyes...

It's a fact - after you've read the same words multiple times, you see what you think is there, not the actual words.

You really do need 'fresh eyes' to catch what you are not seeing, and spellcheck is not enough.

" But, dew yew really think I knead proofreading weather or knot eye ran there document through spell check?"

I rest my case.

Any document to be published - book, article, web site copy, white paper - should be read by someone who is not the author in order to catch the mistakes spell checking software misses.

The exact service you need will vary depending on where you are with the document, and where you are with your English skills.

Basic Editing Definitions (or, see the full ECA list):

Proofreading identifies and corrects typographical errors, punctuation errors, misspelled words, and formatting inconsistencies.

Copyediting also covers these areas, but includes English grammar and word usage, with special attention to consistency of tone.

Complete Rewrite (aka substantive editing) of your draft document to achieve clarity, consistency, and proper sentence structure. Rewriting is listed under our writing services.

Formatting consists of style revisions (e.g., page numbers, margins, headers, footers, spacing, paragraph indentation, quotes, references, footnotes, endnotes).

Our Proofreading and Editing Services:

Proofreading:
We take an already edited document in final form, and read it carefully one last time, checking for any remaining errors and inconsistencies. Proofreading should be done after the final layout of the document. Our Rate: $25 per hour.

Copyediting:
We check for errors of spelling, grammar, punctuation, and word usage, with special attention to tone and clarity. We clean up any confusing or awkward sentence structure. Copyediting is typically done before the final layout of the document. In most cases, copyediting should be followed by proofreading after the document receives it's final layout. Our Rate: $35 per hour.

Formatting/Layout: We use formatting features of Microsoft Word to lay out a professional and attractive document or newsletter. Our Rate: $50 per hour.

File Format Conversion: We can also convert your Word formatted document into an equivalently formatted PDF file. Done after the final layout and proofreading are completed. Our Rate: $25 per hour.

How We Work:

If you've looked at other proofreading or editing services, you may have been expecting per word or per page charges. We charge by time instead because it is the most fair and equitable method. If your document is in good shape, you end up paying less. If your document's a mess, you end up paying more.

Documents you submit should be in either word (.doc), rich text (.rtf), or ascii text (.txt) format. Word format is preferred.

If you submit a Word formatted document, we will do all our corrections using the "Track Changes" feature. This means you can immediately see what we've done because the changes are marked. You also have the option of accepting or rejecting the changes as you see fit - giving you complete creative control over the final document.

If you submit a txt or rtf document, changes will be made to a copy of the file and you will receive both the original and revised file copies.

For all our client assignments, we work diligently to do a high-quality job in the least amount of time. Our minimum charge is one half hour, with additional billing in 15 minute increments.

Compare our rates with industry standard fees, and you'll see we are very competitive.

We prefer to work via electronic file exchange (aka email). However, if you require snail mail, our direct costs - such as delivery services - will include an additional $5.00 handling fee.

Rush jobs, where we need to begin work immediately or to work evenings or weekends, incur an additional 25 percent fee.

After you submit your document, we will provide you with an estimated invoice, which is payable before we begin work on your document. A final bill tallying exact time charged, any additional rush or postage fees, and any balance due will be included with the finished document.

How To Submit:

Simply click here to send us an email submission, with your document included as a file attachment. Indicate in the text of the email:

  • your name and email address,
  • how soon you need the project completed (please be realistic),
  • and the type of service you are requesting (eg, copyediting, proofreading, formatting, or conversion).

It is also helpful if you include information about your target audience for copyediting requests.

If our schedule permits us to accept your work, we will respond with an estimate and payment instructions, along with our targeted completion date. This date assumes our work starts promptly, which means your initial payment must be made promptly. Our payments are handled electronically via PayPal, unless you request payment via an offline method.

It's a relatively painless process, which is more difficult to describe than to do.
You can get started by clicking here to email your submission, and don't forget to attach that document file;).
